Who else can create a more meaningful and helpful card game, other than an actual therapist? Where Should We Begin is a game of stories, created by Esther Perel, a Belgian psychotherapist best known for her podcasts and books. However, one thing we think should be appreciated way more is her card game, WSWB.

The idea of it is to help people connect more deeply, and although it was originally designed for couples, we’ve found it to be very successful for friends and family too. What matters most is your aim to strengthen the relationship with the person in question.

Considering that Where Should We Begin? really helps you start the conversations you don’t quite know how, we’d say it’s a great idea to purchase the physical copy. And that would be the best idea, if our free printable version weren’t available! But it is! And just one click below!

In such question card games, you can probably just figure out the gameplay yourself. If anything, you can just draw cards and answer whatever they ask. However, Esther has thought about how to make the game, besides being very helpful and deep, entertaining as well. Typically, Where Should We Begin? is played by 2 people, either partners, friends, or family members, because it feels more close and personal; however, it works fine with larger groups of people too.

Where Should We Begin PDF - Rules

There are several ways of playing, and in the rules book in the physical copy of this card game, they are explained meticulously. The simplest way is to use just the story cards and ignore the prompts. Basically, you take turns drawing cards and share your stories about them.

However, our most favorite way of playing, explained in the rules sheet as well, includes all cards. How it goes is that each of you will get 7 story cards, and in one round, you will secretly pick one of your cards to answer. At the same time, one prompt card is read, so your story must, preferably, tie into that theme or direction. Once the stories are told, players then reveal the story card they used.

The most beautiful thing is that there’s no competition, no winner or loser. You’re simply on a journey to get to know each other better. You’ll play until you’re tired, or until you think you know everything about each other.

Where Should We Begin PDF Cards

As mentioned, WSWB has two types of cards included: the story cards (or the question cards) and the prompt cards. Although in the newer editions, you might find the prompt cards removed, there will be a dice that will replace them. However, in this PDF file we’ve made for you, you will find both types of cards.

First, you’ll read the 108 story cards. Each has a small colored icon in the bottom right corner, and as the creator said, if you want to play in safe mode, you will have to remove the cards with the pink triangle. They’re a little more intimate.

As you see, cards don’t have typical questions in them. They start like an unfinished story. This is actually one of the very well-thought-out things in this card game. This way of writing the cards helps you get more vulnerable in sharing your emotions and thoughts, and it feels more like a conversation, rather than just answering a closed-ended question.

And then follow the 27 prompt cards. They’re blue and written in the other direction, so you can tell them apart with the story cards. The idea of the prompt cards is that you’ll have to connect your secret story card with the mood written on these prompt cards. So, if you’re asked to share, let’s say, what you’re control freak about, and the prompt is ‘awkward’, it means that your control-freak story should be something that the other person might find awkward.
